Wetherlam

Set amid the wild fells of Cumberland on the outbreak of the Second World War, a young man walks along a river path wondering why he does the things he does.

The nearby village is coffee-table-book perfect. But bad things can happen in beautiful places and nice people can do bad things.

The villagers accept the possibility of a German invasion and plan strategies to deceive the enemy and stockpile food. A young boy’s body is retrieved from the river Brathay. Could he be one of the evacuees invading the village from the towns? At first this local news impacts the isolated community more than the fear of imminent war.

Matthew and Emma Scott survive the war untouched apart from their own lonely battle with sheep rearing in an inhospitable landscape. That changes when they are confronted with a stranger standing in their kitchen. Peter Williams, dressed in an old army greatcoat, is a man of secrets but the weary brother and sister hide secrets of their own.
